In a bold move that combines innovation, impact, and star power, Gather Ventures, a Black woman-founded investment platform, has announced a major push into funding climate-focused startups across Africa, with none other than Rihanna backing the mission.
The initiative, which places environmental resilience and economic equity at its core, signals a growing shift in how capital is being deployed to tackle the global climate crisis, especially in regions most vulnerable to its effects.
A Vision Rooted in Equity and Empowerment
Founded by Jo Opot, Gather Ventures is built on the principle of bridging funding gaps for underrepresented founders, particularly women and communities of colour. The fund’s African climate investment strategy aims to back early-stage ventures working on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, water access, and climate tech tailored to local communities.
“There’s so much innovation happening on the ground in Africa, but not nearly enough capital is reaching those who need it most,” said Jo Opot. “We’re here to change that, and we’re honoured to have Rihanna’s support in doing so.”

Rihanna: More Than a Celebrity
Rihanna’s involvement isn’t just symbolic. Known for using her platform to advocate for racial justice, climate equity, and global development, most notably through her Clara Lionel Foundation, the music icon and entrepreneur is lending both her voice and financial support to help Gather Ventures scale its ambitions across the continent.
“Africa doesn’t just need aid, it needs investment, and belief,” Rihanna said in a statement. “These founders are building real solutions for our shared future. It’s time the world started paying attention.”
Investing in the Future
The initiative is already in motion, with Gather Ventures announcing investments in five startups based in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. These include ventures pioneering solar-powered irrigation systems, biodegradable packaging solutions, and AI tools for predicting and mitigating the impact of floods and droughts.
In addition to capital, the startups will receive support through capacity-building programs, international exposure, and mentorship from global experts in climate science and sustainable business.
A Blueprint for Inclusive Climate Finance
As climate conversations increasingly focus on innovation and scalability, Africa remains both a frontline victim and a potential leader in global sustainability. Gather Ventures and Rihanna’s partnership serves as a blueprint for how philanthropy, celebrity influence, and mission-driven investing can converge to drive meaningful change.
This move also challenges traditional models of venture capital, urging the industry to prioritise impact over extractive profit and to uplift solutions emerging from the very communities affected by the climate emergency.
What’s Next?
Gather Ventures plans to expand its portfolio over the next 18 months, with the goal of investing in 25 African-led climate startups by 2026. With Rihanna’s influence helping to amplify the message, the initiative is already drawing attention from global investors and development agencies eager to rethink how climate finance is structured.
In a world racing against time to avert climate catastrophe, this collaboration is a powerful reminder that the future of climate innovation is not only urgent, but inclusive.
