Kamille: Song writing Superstar

When a successful song is released and charts well we are quick to praise the artist for their lyrical genius and ability to make catchy hooks. However, we always tend to downplay the machine behind some artists. The one who writes the lyrics, the melodies and gives the song its life. These factors are always down to how talented a songwriter is. Behind many great artists is an even greater songwriter. In the UK we have been blessed with our very own sign writing genius that is Kamille. The UK singer and song-writer has written massive hits that have dominated the charts worldwide and it’s time to give her the flowers she deserves.

Kamille’s big break as a songwriter came in March 2013 where she co-wrote the single “What About Us” by  The Saturdays featuring Sean Paul which rose to become a number one single. The success didn’t stop there as Kamille then went to co-write three songs for Little Mix for their sophomore album titled “Salute.” This then saw the beginning of a hugely successful and prosperous relationship between herself and the girl group. This was seen in 2015 where she co-wrote the song “Black Magic” which became her second number one UK single and also saw her receive her first Brit Award nomination for Best British Single. Number one hits became more consistent for the song writer and girl group. With Kamille co-writing the hit song “Shout Out To My Ex” in
2016 which then spent 3 weeks in the charts at number 1 in the UK and has then gone on to become certified 3x Platinum in the UK. This song went on to win the Brit Award in 2017 for “Best British Single.” Kamille has in total written over 30 songs for Little Mix which has gained chart success of six consecutive UK Top 5 albums and nine UK Top 20 singles. She has also been dubbed the unofficial 5th member of the girl group by Little Mix herself.

In 2018, Kamille went on to win the Songwriter of the Year Award at the A&R Awards 2018. With her achievements being recognised most notably by achieving two UK number one singles back to back with “I’ll Be There” co-written with Jess Glyne and “Solo” which was co-written for Clean Bandit featuring Demi Lovato. With “Solo” being the most-Shazamed song of 2018. 2019 saw Kamille be nominated for a Brit award for “Best British Single” achieving 2x Platinum status and raking in over 700 million Spotify streams. This was all achieved for the song “Don’t Call Me Up” which she co-wrote for Mabel with Steve Mac. Kamille has helped co-write all of Mabel’s singles that have charted in the Top 10 in the UK since 2019. Ultimately proving that she has the magic touch when it comes to achieving chart success. In 2019 Kamille was recognised for her contributions to the music industry when she was awarded with the Music Creative Award. In the same year Kamille launched her own record label and publishing company titled Pure Cut. She signed herself as the company’s first artist where she has released multiple songs of her own. Her most notable song features S1mba and is tilted “AYO!” which saw the song get re-released by the Star. One and PS1 remix. She also revealed that she will be launching her first Pure Cut signings later this year.

Kamille has actively shown a willingness to promote opportunities for women in the music industry. This can be seen where she took a year long mentorship for song writers and producers as part of the Ivor’s Acadmey Rising Star programme. She also teamed up with the songwriter Fred Again to launch the “Next Up” programme to seek and mentor a female producer.

Kamille reached the peak of her song writing career in March 2021 when she won her first Grammy Award as ”Future Nostalgia” won Pop Vocal Album at the 63 rd Grammy Awards. She also went on to achieve her 18 th UK Top 10 single in June 2021 when Little Mix’s release of “Confetti” featuring Saweetie peaked at number 9 in the charts.
