Tyler Perry, the renowned filmmaker, actor, and media mogul, is facing a $260 million lawsuit filed in California by Derek Dixon, an actor who appeared in Perry’s BET+ series The Oval and Ruthless. Filed on June 13, 2025, the lawsuit alleges repeated instances of sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation, casting a shadow over one of Hollywood’s most influential figures.
According to the legal complaint, Dixon claims that Perry offered him acting opportunities in exchange for sexual compliance. He alleges that Perry promised him continued roles in Ruthless and The Oval while exerting professional and personal pressure. The lawsuit outlines multiple incidents over a three-year period, including a particularly distressing encounter in 2020 at Perry’s Georgia home, where Perry allegedly entered Dixon’s guest room, climbed into bed, and touched him without consent. Another alleged incident in June 2021 involved Perry forcibly pulling down Dixon’s underwear and groping him.
Dixon also asserts that when he refused Perry’s advances, he was subjected to professional retaliation. His character was reportedly written out of The Oval following his rejection of Perry and his subsequent filing of a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in 2024. He describes experiencing severe mental health effects, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, as a result of these experiences.

The lawsuit includes what Dixon says are text messages from Perry, allegedly containing suggestive language and overtures about sexual intimacy. Dixon claims he repeatedly declined these advances. He is seeking $260 million in punitive damages and has requested a jury trial to hear the case.
Tyler Perry’s legal team, led by attorney Matthew Boyd, has categorically denied all allegations. In a public statement, Perry’s representatives described the lawsuit as a “shakedown” and claimed the accusations are completely fabricated.
The legal complaint lists charges including sexual battery, gender-based violence, a hostile work environment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. If the case proceeds, it could have far-reaching implications not just for Perry and his production company, but also for ongoing conversations around power dynamics, consent, and accountability in the entertainment industry.
As the case makes its way through the legal system, it is likely to draw widespread attention. Tyler Perry, whose rise to fame and influence has made him a prominent figure in film, television, and philanthropy, has built a brand based on family-friendly values and empowerment. The outcome of this case could significantly impact his legacy and future projects.
The lawsuit is currently pending in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Further developments are expected as both parties prepare for what could become a highly publicised legal battle.
