Doctored Sound, a black female-led up-and-coming UK record label has curated their 10-song “The Miseducation of the Insta Generation” project, taking inspiration from Lauryn Hill’s seminal “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”.
Masterminded by Isatta Sheriff, the founder of Doctored Sound, and former rapper who previously consulted for the The Rap Game UK and 0207 Def Jam said “My goal was to use Lauryn Hill’s incredible album as a tool to inspire and develop a new generation of talent. The music industry always asks questions about female rappers and their position in the market. As a Black female rapper, I thought it would be great to create an example, through Doctored Sound.”
“In order to back up my responses, I wanted to do this by arguably using the greatest rap album of all time as inspiration, because it was created by a black woman.”
The project features contributions from SB, Samson, Mercy’s Cartel and more, and flirts with lo fi hip-hop beats, acrobats, 90’s hip-hop and R&B. The Miseducation of the Insta Generation is an apt re-interpretation of the themes seen in The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, addressing themes such as heartbreak, womanhood, love, pain, coming-of-age and societal pressures, packing it with a modernised look the modern young generations.
The project is ambitious and exciting, relishing with an profoundly human introspection that made the New Jersey rapper’s magnum opus so timeless.
