Wizkid has won ‘Best African artist of the year’

Wizkid has won ‘the Best African artist of the year’ award at the 23rd edition of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs). The Nigerian music superstar outcompeted his fellow Nigerian artists like Tems, Ckay, Joeboy and Fireboy DML to win the annual trophy. 

In his speech immediately after winning the Vodafone Ghana Awards, Wizkid whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun said: “delay is not denial” in reference to the time it took him to win the coveted award. 

The awards were held this weekend at the Grande Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre and showcased performances from top Ghanaian music stars. Wizkid was given a tribute on the first night of this year’s edition of the awards alongside Stonebwoy who won the ‘Music for Good’ category. 

Previously known as Ghana Music Awards, the award ceremony was established in 1999 to celebrate the outstanding contributions of Ghanaian musicians to the growth and the expansion of associated industry.

Traditional Artiste of the Year (Non-voting Category) – Nii Tettey Tetteh

Instrumentalist of the Year – Joshua Moszi

Male Vocal Performance of the Year – Amazing God by Kwaisey Pee

Female Vocal Performance of the Year – Where You Are by Niella

Songwriter of the Year – Praise by Fameye

Best Video of the Year – Nyinya by Bosom PYung

Producer of the Year – MOGBeatz

African Artist of the Year – WizKid

Lifetime Achievement Award – Agya Koo Nimoh

Unsung Artiste of the Year – Gambo

Music for Good – Greedy Men by Stonebwoy
