The Nigerian Film industry dubbed ‘Nollywood‘ is valued as the second biggest industry in the world after India’s Bollywood as it produces thousands of movies annually.

Many Nigerians at home and abroad, now see the Nollywood film industry as a thriving space growing beyond Africa, looking at the types of movies they are producing recently.

This shows that compare to the past, the industry is now emerging with great developments.

Blood Sisters is a thriller movie series made in 2022 through the collaborations of Netflix and Mo Abdu’s EbonyLife TV.

Recently it’s seen as the first Nigerian original series streaming on Netflix. The movie has attracted lots of positive reviews and recommendations from the African audience.The movie portrays humour and domestic violence in the lives of two blood sisters. It was directed by a famous film-maker, Biyi Bandele who passed on a few weeks back.

It’s a hit crime thriller movie that made it to number 9 on Netflix ranking of the top 10 most watched movies.

2. For Maria Ebun Pataki

For Maria is a multi-award-winning film directed by Damilola Orimogunje. It has captured the story of a young woman Derin, who suffers the pain that comes with childbirth yet battles with postpartum depression, a condition that hasn’t gained enough attention from film-makers in the past.

The movie has gained recognition worldwide as it’s one of the most streamed movies on Netflix.

In the movie, Maria means, “sea of sorrow.”

3. King Of Thieves

King Of Thieves is a thrilling story of bravery and betrayal driven by a thirst for revenge that goes beyond the expectation of the audiences on what Nollywood have to offer.

The cast includes some prominent Nigerian comedians such as Broda Shaggi and Mr Macaroni.

However, the movie is an epic Yoruba fiction of Agesinkole, a notorious and powerful bandit who terrorizes the kingdom of Ajeromi.

Femi Adebayo, the executive producer did well with the cinematography and he said in an interview that ‘King of Thieves’ made N170m in its first three weeks premiere at the cinema.

This is a movie that depicts the beautiful cultures of the Yorubas with a traditional taste of leadership in our society.

 

4. A Simple Lie

A Simple Lie is a romantic comedy about a woman who runs into her ex and lies to him that she has cancer.

The movie is all about a simple lie made in uncomfortable situations that trigger a tragic moment filled with some unanticipated emotions.

This movie is produced right from the best hands of Biodun Stephen, a top-notch Nigerian film-maker in collaboration with David Wade Production.

The casts are some Nollywood star-studded actors such as Bolaji Ogunmola, Bisola Aiyeola, Kachi Nnochiri, Kie Kie Adeaga and Emmanuel Ikubese.

 

5. The Man of God

The Man of God paints the reality of life that is full of struggles in fighting for one’s faith and yet other demons that haunt the soul.

The movie is directed by Bolanle Austen Peters, and features Nollywood stars like Prince Nelson Enwerem, Osas Ighodaro, Eucharia Anunobi, Olumide Nworu and others.

It’s one of the highest-viewed movies and ranked among the top 10 movies on Netflix in the US, Canada and other countries.
