In his first debut for Warp Records, South Londoner Wu-Lu’s riveting new album Loggerhead contains post-genre war dubs bookend with an afro-punk energy that speak directly to these precarious times. The twelve profound tracks from the producer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist are made of depth-charged post-punk, thrashed-up skate-park screamo, and gauzy hip hop.
With songs themed around gentrification, street violence, Brixton and coming-of-age, it’s laced with pedal-driven ethereal guitars, drill-influenced drums and a bass that warp around the listener; it’s daring, claustrophobic and intimate the same time. The album features performances from black midi’s Morgan Simpson, Léa Sen, Mica Levi, Lex Amor, and Raven Bush.
